The
Earliest Finds of the Olive:
The appearance
of the olive tree is lost in the depth of time and it is difficult
to determine exactly when and where it first appeared. Regions
in the Eastern Mediterranean, however, are generally accepted
as the homeland of the olive tree. Fossilized olive tree leaves
in Santorini and Nissiros witness the existence of the olive
tree for more than 50.000-60.000 years!
The intensive cultivation of the olive tree began towards
the end of the Bronze Age. Inscriptions on tablets of ideograms
in Linear B refer not only to the cultivation of the olive
tree but also to scented olive oil with herbs. The earliest
evidence regarding the use of the olives in their nutrition
dates back about 3500 years on the island of Crete.

The
Oleastra is derived from Latin Olea Europea
Oleaster and Ancient Greek Oleastro, the wild olive tree, a
species met in the lower altitude belt along the Aegean shores,
Cyprus, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine.
Oleastro
Enterprises Ltd. is the market leader in the Cyprus
organic olive oil market, because of uncompromised commitment
to top quality olive oil, its constant innovation, and its
flexibility.
The
company has introduced the first organic olive oil, ‘Oleastro’
in the Cyprus market in a variety of sizes and presentation
boxes. For the first time, olive oil is more than a cooking
commodity.
Oleastro
Enterprises Ltd. has created the House of the Olive
– ‘Oleastro’ , the first in Cyprus ecological
olive mill, olive oil museum, and visitors’ center -
amidst the organic olive grove.
Oleastro
Enterprises Ltd. is a family business. It is the
brainchild of Lina and Andreas Ellinas with the support of
their children Daniel and Natalie. Our friends call us ‘romantic
fools’ for our love and devotion to quality organic
olive oil and for our struggle for sustainable rural development.
-
In 2005, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry selected
Lina as one of the three role models of women entrepreneurs
in male-dominated areas in Cyprus for the Eurochambers project
“CHASE”, CHambers Against Stereotypes in Employment.
-
Lina was selected as a role model of a woman entrepreneur
for the EU-EQUAL program (for the second pillar: entrepreneurship)
to represent Cyprus in Madrid in 2005.
- Lina’s
case was also selected as a ‘success story’
for rural entrepreneurial activity by the Greek RCEI (Research
Center for Equality Issues) and presented in their Komotini
workshops in 2005.
-
Finally, Lina was also nominated for the award of Women’s
Creativity in Rural Life – 2003. Her nomination reached
the final short list. For further information please visit
